Five‑year‑old Ksyusha urgently needs help. She was born a healthy girl, but when she turned one month old, she ended up in the hospital with a diagnosis of “jaundice.” It was there, in the neonatal pathology department, that the doctor heard a murmur in the little girl’s heart and sent her for an ultrasound. After the examination, the parents received the diagnosis: congenital heart defect, and the girl was referred to the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. Oksana has been on the register there ever since.
The family had hoped that the defect would eventually close on its own so the girl wouldn’t need an open surgery. After all, Ksyusha is constantly ill with colds, viral infections, grade 1 and 2 adenoids, and gastrointestinal problems (the child is on a permanent special diet). Oksanka gains weight very poorly and is extremely thin; at five and a half years old she weighs only 14 kg. On the pediatrician’s recommendation, she does not attend any group childcare settings (kindergarten).
At the latest examination at the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, doctors saw that the defect is worsening and the right side of the heart is also enlarging. Because of this, they recommend performing an endovascular intervention as soon as possible to close the defect permanently. In the Velen family only the father works, as the mother has to stay at home and care for the child.
For the entire time the family has managed to collect only 27 000 UAH, and the rest of the amount cannot be gathered without the help of caring people. At UBB we plan to raise the remaining sum. Despite the fact that the girl gets sick very often, she is growing into a beautiful and smart little lady. Ksyusha can count, read, and solve math problems. Oksanka dreams of being healthy and going to school next year! Let’s help this little girl have a healthy heart!
