Sofia Tkachenko

Currently at the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery there is a newborn, Sofiia Tkachanko. She was born with multiple defects in her heart and needs an urgent heart operation to install a cardiac implant—a conduit. A single mother, who with her three children has found herself in such distress, is asking all caring people to help save her daughter’s life. Hope rests only on kind-hearted people, and there is no time at all.

Sofia was born on October 10, and it was clear from the moment she arrived that a fight would be needed throughout her tiny life. Sofia has a congenital heart defect—a ventricular septal defect, an open arterial duct, and pulmonary hypertension. If she does not undergo surgery in the coming days, the little one could simply suffocate. Right now, blood reaches Sofia’s lungs through a tiny connection between the aorta and the branches of the pulmonary artery; essentially, this is the only source of life for the baby. As the child grows, this connection becomes insufficient, oxygen saturation drops, and the girl begins to gasp for air—unfortunately, this can lead to the worst outcome. Doctors at the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery are able to perform a complex operation to restore the outflow from the heart to the pulmonary artery and close the ventricular septal defect. Because the child lacks her own pulmonary artery, it must be replaced with an expensive biological implant—a conduit. After this surgery, her heart will function like that of a healthy child.

A single mother has no funds to buy a heart implant. Besides caring for her three little ones, she also looks after a sick elderly mother. Her husband has vanished and offers no support. Her only hope is the kindness of caring people.
