Mushhegyan Serhiy

Little Serhiyko Mushegyan has a congenital heart defect—a secondary defect of the atrioventricular septum. He urgently needs heart surgery to implant a cardiac occluder. The operation at the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery is provided free of charge; only the occluder itself must be purchased. The family has no funds to cover this costly life‑saving treatment, which is the only hope for their son.

Letter from a mother:

At 8 months old, my son was diagnosed with “hydrocephalic syndrome.” We are under the care of a neurologist and take the appropriate medication. At school we have a special education group for children like him. He is constantly ill. At the end of 2011, my son underwent surgery at the Miskyi Children’s Clinical Hospital No. 1, urology department, in Kyiv. The defect was congenital, the diagnosis was singular, but when the operation began it turned out that he had left‑sided obstructive megaureter‑hydronephrosis (a narrowed opening in the bladder and an enlarged ureter). They performed a reconstruction and created a new opening. Such an operation required a great deal of money and effort.

During preparation for the surgery, we were referred to the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, where they gave us this frightening diagnosis – a congenital heart defect, a secondary defect of the atrial septum. All these years we traveled for consultations and hoped that the hole in the heart would close. Recently, Serhiyko has developed shortness of breath and he needs an urgent operation. We constantly take expensive medications and undergo various tests.

Our family lives in the private sector in the city of Hizhyni. I work as a nurse in the Hizhyn maternity hospital, and my husband is a specialist in the State Consumer Service administration. Our salary is minimal and all the money goes to expensive medication. I dream that our little son would be healthy, so I am turning to you for help! Our family is unable to raise such an amount of money on our own, and our beloved son's life is in danger”.
